Momentum for Life

"Momentum for Life: Sustaining personal health, integrity, and strategic focus as a leader" is an exceptional resource from a pastor that speaks from over 30 years experience. He has built his church from less that 100 members to over 4500 average attendance each week. Our culture constantly shows how leaders have fallen from a president's indescretions to Martha Stewart's deception, from the business collapse at Enron to the TV evangelists. Many church problems can be traced back to a failure of leadership. Such problems of these are not new. Stories of leadership failure are chronicled throughout the Bible. "If you can not lead yourself, you will not be effective at leading others." So Michael Slaughter notes that self leadership procedes strategic leadership. Slaughter explains his model for daily living. His five life practices for balance and self leadership include: devotion to God, Life long learning, investing in key relationships, visioning for the future, and eating and exercising for life. Taken together, they shape life as an upward momentum. Leadership is not about entitlement, but example. God strengthens one's life momentum by allowing resistance to come into a person's life. An individual is in partnership with God that requires sweat equity on that person's part. If someone rationalizes in one area he or she may end up rationalizing in every area of life. People need to start somewhere. The essence of momentum: If one stops, it is almost impossible to get going again. Clutter in marriage, finances, or anywhere else will attract more.

  1. It seems that Slaughter is in tune with holistic living as being essential to Christian leadership. As we continue to walk in the leadership God has called us to we must maintain the idea that God wants us to be healthy in every area of our lives. We have to focus on the spiritual, mental, emotional, financial and physical aspects in our lives to effectively lead God’s people. The momentum as Christian leaders is the aspiration to attain this holistic lifestyle. The struggle as leaders is the perseverance and endurance we hold fast to as we grow in one area but fail in another. Being encouraged that God uses the most unlikely people to bring His name glory should be comforting as we as leaders strive to catch up with who God has already called us to be. Trial and tribulations only make us stronger and give us more momentum to lead effectively and to allow God to be glorified as He uses us in the midst of our struggles. Being assured that Christ did not save part of our lives and left the other part unsaved, He saved us that we may let His light shine through us to carry out His will for us. Don’t lose the momentum.
