Tony Dungy - Leadership

Tony Dungy who was the coach and spiritual leader for the Super Bowl Champions the Indianapolis Colts. Dungy is not a coach who yells and screams at his players but one who leads by quiet strength. Three aspects from Dungy’s leadership: 1.) Leaders need to have a higher purpose: Dungy believes that his life has a higher purpose than just winning games. Dungy believes the ultimate purpose in his life is to be a father, husband, serve his community, and make this country better. 2.) A leader needs to care for the people they are leading, not just what the person provides. Dungy personally cared about his players and treated them as a family. 3.)Faith: Dungy’s son committed suicide and watching Dungy deal with the pain one could really see the deep, unshakable faith, and love that he had. In times of pain and distress the faith that a leader has in God will always get them through struggles. Tony Dungy is a Christian who loves Jesus Christ and is a leader who speaks through his quiet strength living out his life in Christ in action and truth. This is very inspiring and reminds me that actions speak louder than words. If 75% of people I meet never read the Bible, but only know about God from what they see in me. What am I teaching and showing people about God by how I live my life? What are you showing people in the person that you are and the way that you live and lead?

  2. After I did my leadership interview with a man that I respect very much for his abilities to lead, I realized that the best way to learn how to lead is to watch and learn from a good leader and follow their example. Tony Dungy is a great leader and his example of leadership will not only effect those he led, but everyone who saw him lead (which is a whole lot of people in his case). Christ says that he is our strength when we are weak, and the story you shared about Dungy losing his son to suicide is a great example of how Christ became his strength when he was at his weakest. I can only hope that I can lean on Jesus like that when I go through something so horrible. I want to be a leader like the great leaders that I look up to. I want to be a leader that someday others will look up to, but I definitely don't think I am at that point yet. Right now, I will continue to follow after the great examples of leadership in my own life and learn as much as I can while these leaders are still around.
